This picture illustrates
the subtle use of neutral colors and their ability
to create a visually pleasing table. By choosing
placemats the same color as the plate rim, we expanded
the block of color surrounding the roosters on
the plates, emphasizing them more.
The napkins are
not
white -- that would have been too stark a contrast.
Instead they are a soft gray-green, picking up
on colors in the rooster centerpiece and unifying
the
table.
The black napkin rings draw your attention
the the black feathers in the roosters on the plates.
